Concrete Matters - substanziell Konkretes

In 2021, IMA puts particular emphasis on actively closing the gender gap in the field of electronic arts and electroacoustic music. As a response to the call #wikigap, we engage as a pressure group of experts on the internet to overcome the gap in representation between men and women, as well as people from LGBTTIQ backgrounds, in the history of music.

We offer a selected group of authors a two-day workshop in which they are trained as Wikipedians.

W for Welcome?

Wikipedia stands for free knowledge, encyclopedias in the 21st century, and the power of decentral collaboration. But can Wikipedia also become a symbol for a welcoming online community which celebrates diversity and inclusion? If Wikipedia wants to live up to its vision to share the sum of all knowledge, we will need to be open for those whose knowledge is not adequately represented yet.

The talk covers some of the challenges that Wikimedia organisations encounter in facilitating such a cultural change, how they deal with it and some learnings which might be of interest for other communities.

Lecture Susanne Kogler

Scientific Quality-Criteria in the Era of Fake News and Conspiracy Theories or Against Anonimity. A polemic

What is real? What is true? On which sources can we rely? In the era of postmodernity, it seems that many problems are a question of differing perspectives. In times of “shit-storms,” populism, or “cancel culture,” various standpoints are nevertheless needed. Where only one opinion dominates, authoritarian politics are not far. So, how can we debate social and political problems, all the while respecting necessary quality standards and the freedom of opinion? Over the centuries, the sciences and humanities have developed specific criteria, as well as tools which provide answers to these questions. Not only is an argumentation based on facts important, but sensual perceptions, feelings, emotions, and the tendency to remain silent should all be taken into account. Art, too, has something to say on the matter, but in order for it’s voice to be heard, and to bring the perspective of minorities into the debate, open-mindedness, self-critical capacity, respect, tolerance, and transparency are indispensable. It seems that contextualisation, rational argumentation, and the readiness to explain one’s standpoint (if necessary, to modify it, as well), are qualities that seem to be absolutely inalienable today, particularly as far as social media and the world wide web are concerned. These qualities must be a sine qua non for all public activities.

On encyclopaedic (non)relevance - Wikipedia and misogyny

For many, Wikipedia is the first digital port of call for research of any kind. Despite the fact that active participation in the online encyclopaedia is open to all,Wikipedia is unfortunately far from gender-equal: the proportion of female editors is around 10%, and in the German-language Wikipedia there are five biographical articles about men for every one about a woman. The largest knowledge database on the internet thus offers a very unbalanced, namely male, view of the world. This is also evident when women attempt to write articles about women and these are deleted by men due to lack of relevance, as well as in the often misogynistic deletion discussions surrounding these articles. In my input, I would like to share my experience of having a Wikipedia article written about me and take a critical look at the patriarchal and misogynistic culture within Wikipedia’s editorial community.
